PASSING

Passing is a 2021 black-and-white drama film written, produced, and directed by Rebecca Hall in her feature directorial debut. Based on Nella Larsen’s 1929 book of the same name, the film tells the story of two women, Irene (Tessa Thompson) and Clare (Ruth Negga). The story centers on the reunion of the two childhood friends – and their increasing fascination with each other’s lives. Set primarily in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City in the 1920s, the film explores the concept of “passing” – the practice in which members of oppressed races with skin colors that could be considered white, would ‘pass’ as the unoppressed race – and how each woman has grappled with that path.
