Happenings Here: Pysanks Egg Decorating

Learn about the art of Pysanky, an important cultural tradition of the Ukrainian people. A Pysanka is a Ukrainian Easter egg decorated using a wax resist (aka batik) method. Its name derives from the Ukrainian verb “pysaty,” meaning “to write.”  This hands-on experience includes drawing divisions and designs, use of kistka (stylus), techniques of the wax-resist method, dyeing process, removing wax, and finishing methods. Information about the history and meanings of the colors and symbols in this Ukrainian art will be shared during the workshop.

All materials will be provided, and each participant will take home two eggs of their own in this three-hour workshop taught by renowned artist Elaine K Dykman.

Elaine K Dykman is a 3rd generation Ukrainian-American who has been practicing the art of Pysanky, or Ukrainian Egg decorating, since childhood. An Oakland resident originally from Connecticut, she learned the craft from her mother, Maria Kalakura Kruelski. Maria grew up in the heart of Little Ukraine on the Lower East Side of NYC, absorbing the culture and language of her family and the Ukrainian community. Over the years, Maria shared the tradition of Pysanky with friends and taught classes throughout Connecticut. Now, Elaine creates Pysanky and teaches in honor of her mom and Ukrainian heritage.

Please let your club concierge know if you are interested in attending, as class size is extremely limited.  Due to an abundance of last-minute cancelations and “no-shows,” we will now only confirm your reservation request once you have dropped off your check to your club concierge.

So don’t wait. You will not want to miss this wonderful opportunity.
