Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. Turned down by his publisher, Dickens used what little money he had to publish A Christmas Carol himself – worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. Dickens relied on real-life inspiration and his vivid imagination to bring Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer), Tiny Tim and other classic characters to life in “A Christmas Carol,” forever changing the holiday season into the celebration known today. A Christmas Carol breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution.
